Welcome Cahn Fellows :)

Hello Friends,
If you're reading this....you've found our blog on LEARNING WITH LINCOLN.  Welcome!  I hope you have ordered your book and please post a comment to this blog letting everyone know that "you're in."  We can start when everyone has their book.... but I posted the first question that can be answered without having the book yet.  Feel free publish a post on the first question raised below, raise your own question or comment on someone else's comments.  It's just a way to respectfully share thoughts, ideas and insights.

Question:  Ten leadership qualities and skills are noted in the introduction (of LEARNING WITH LINCOLN: LEADERSHIP PRACTICES FOR SCHOOL SUCCESS) as practices exemplified in Lincoln's life and work.  Before examining each practice in the forthcoming chapters, which qualities and skills do you think will be particularly important to you, based on the context or your school, district or organization?   And why?

Here are Lincoln's ten leadership qualities outlined in the Introduction of the book:
1) Implementing and sustaining a mission and vision with focused and profound clarity
2) Communicating ideas effectively with precise and straightforward language
3) Building a diverse and competent team to successfully address the mission
4) Engendering trust, loyalty and respect through humility humor and personal example
5) Leading and servicing with emotional intelligence and empathy
6) Exercising situational competence and responding appropriately to implement effective change
7) Rising beyond personal and professional trials through tenacity, persistence, resilience, and courage
8) Exercising purposeful visibility
9) Demonstrating personal growth and enhanced competence as a lifetime learner, willing to reflect on and expand ideas
10) Believing that hope can become a reality.

  2. Colleen,

    Great Job!

In answer to your question, Attribute #1 is encompassing #'s 2-10. Without the implementation and the capacity to sustain the mission and vision, not much else is possible for any long term appreciable effects.

  3. Thank you Paula and Robin for the kudos :)
I agree with you Robin that implementing and sustaining the mission focus is important and may be the most important attribute on the list.
I was thinking that #3 was most important at my school because I need people to help me implement what I hope is "our" vision and mission and I think building a strong team and having those people help is the key to success.
